The great family that is San Patrignano mourns the death of Gian Marco Moratti, who passed away in the early hours of Monday the 26th of February. He was a constant presence at the community. He had a set of values that instilled strength to the thousands of residents of SanPa, a community that he believed in right from the start. A community for which he fought for through very difficult times. A community that brought him great joy but also great pain.

The funeral will be held tomorrow, Tuesday the 27th of February at 7:00 in San Patrignano’s auditorium. Gian Marco will be buried, in accordance to his will, in San Patrignano’s cemetery.

He first met Vincenzo Muccioli in 1979, through a mutual friend. It was Vincenzo’s vision that immediately won him over: to help men and women that had been rejected by society. Gian Marco had found someone that truly wanted to change the world, someone that lived by the same set of values that he believed in.

Gian Marco and his wife Letizia were there from the start, when the community was nothing but a set of caravans, dirt roads and long cold winters. His sacrifices were paid off however by a community spirit that he helped create, energy that drew him close to the people that he was trying to help build a future for. It was this altruism that helped continue the pact he had made from the start: to always help the marginalized.

He was an extraordinarily generous man in possession of a great emotional intelligence that allowed him to connect with people from all walks of life. He was a very brave man, and able to help Vincenzo Muccioli through stormy waters, having to make very painful decision for the good of San Patrignano.

What made him happy was to see the miracles that this place preformed, allowing people to finally find themselves. He would eat lunch with the residents whenever he could, and would listen to their stories, their experiences, their hopes and dreams. Gian Marco was not just a philanthropist; he wasn’t just offering a service. He was first and foremost a volunteer. He was always looking to innovate and evolve new and better ways to help the boys and girls of San Patrignano, always learning and contributing his knowledge to a community that he served right up to the day he died.

As when a beloved family member passes, the people of San Patrignano will continue to be inspired by his kindness and the humanity that he showed. The community will continue its commitment in his name.
