Drug Policy Futures

On March 15Th , at the 60Th Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna, Drug Policy Future presented four position papers on balanced,  effective and human rights respectful drug policies, to many governmental delegations and NGOs on the occasion of the official launch of the network: San Patrignano is a founding member of this network.

Drug Policy Futures is an alliance of networks covering more than 300 NGOs from all over the world, a global platform for a new drug policy debate based on health. DPF rejects the simple dichotomy between ”a war on drugs” on the one hand and ”legalization” on the other. Instead DPF believes in engaging in an open dialogue about the strengths and weaknesses of global drug policies. DPF advocates for evidence based strategies to promote public health, safety and the well-being of society, including those addicted to drugs and their families.

DPF created this report to provide an interpretation of the past 10 years – from 2009 to 2019 – since the adoption by the UN Member States of the Political Declaration and Plan of Action on International Cooperation towards an Integrated and Balanced Strategy to Counter the World Drug Problem. It clarifies and articulates the key issues that need to be addressed to encourage coherent policies, recommendations for future approach and action and shares the experience from alcohol and tobacco control. The goal of the report is to direct the global conversation to the effective, evidence-based and sustainable solutions to the World Drug Problem. We hope that this publication will help overcome the artificially created dichotomy between drug prevention and harm reduction initiatives and will move us all towards action that leads to better health, more safety, greater economic benefits, protected human rights and more freedom for all, leaving no one behind.
